Kids Awards Night The church family is invited to come support the Bible Explorers kids on Wednesday, April 29, for their end-of-year Awards Night! The kids will start at 6:15 and the Awards Program will begin at 7:00. 

Ladies Banquet Mark your calendars for this year’s Ladies Banquet on Monday, May 11 at 6:00 pm. The theme will be HospitaliTEA. Sign up at the Welcome Center to let us know that you’re coming and how many will be in your party

Church WorkDay Come lend a hand on Saturday, May 16, from 9:00-12:00 for our church workday.

VBS Calling all kids 3 years old through those entering 6th grade this fall! Mark your calendars for June 22-26. Join us for an amazing week as we explore all the ways light brightens, illuminates, reflects, and reveals to discover that Jesus is the true Light of the world! Registration opens April 29.

Easter Thank You It takes many people each Sunday for our gatherings to run smoothly. From children’s ministry workers, to the kitchen crew, to those at the sound booth or on the platform – thank you for all you do! And to those who donated candy for the Egg Hunt, thank you! We are grateful to have had about 30 kids with us.

Minimal Facts

Easter time is for pastors and churches the most wonderful and exhausting time of the year (along with Christmas). But I love it. I love the Tenebrae “Service of Shadows” on Good Friday, the Sunrise Service early on Easter Sunday Morning. But most of all I love the astonishing Truth that Easter celebrates, with is the keystone of our faith.

I don’t love the idea that Easter is all about springtime, the yearly cycle of birth-death- and reborn. And some vague sentiment of “what Easter means to us all”. And I especially don’t love the claim that Jesus’ resurrection was a myth.

I agree with the Apostle Paul: if Jesus didn’t rise for the dead, “we are of all people most to be pitied.” (1 Cor. 15:19) If I didn’t really believe that Jesus rose from the dead, I’d quit the ministry and go het an honest job.

Here are what are called the “minimal facts” about the death of Jesus and what happened next. Even unbelieving, skeptical scholars admit the following things:

Ofer Levy We are excited to have Ofer Levy from Jews For Jesus with us today to share the presentation “Christ in the Passover.”

5th Sunday Fellowship Join us tonight for our 5th Sunday pitch-in dinner! The church will provide pulled pork, bring a side to share! There will also be a chocolate-themed dessert bake-off to enter as well.

OCC 5th Sunday Offering Today is our first special love-offering for shoebox postage. You can give at the Welcome Center or by writing OCC on your check.

Good Friday This Friday, at 7:30 PM, we’ll gather in the sanctuary for a Tenebrae Service. We will sing some songs, read Scripture, and observe the Lord’s Table as we reflect on Christ’s sacrifice on the cross.

Easter Sunday We will have a Sunrise Service at 6:30 AM followed by breakfast in the Fellowship Hall. Sunday School will be at 9:00 AM, and at 10:00 AM we’ll have our Easter Worship Service. Following the service, there will be an Easter Egg Hunt for our families. Would you consider praying for and inviting one person to come with you?

Easter Breakfast Sign up at the Welcome Center to bring a side for the Easter Breakfast.

Sunday Morning Snacks If you’re interested in helping with the snacks or coffee for Sunday mornings, there will be a brief meeting in the BYKOTA classroom after the morning service.

Baby Shower The whole church family is invited to a baby shower for Sarah and Nathan Jones. The shower will be Saturday at 2:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall. RSVP to Clarissa Just or see her for more details.

5th Sunday Fellowship Next week, we’ll have a 5th Sunday evening pitch-in dinner! Come enjoy fellowship and food with your church family. The church will provide the main dish. Bring a side to share! There will also be a chocolate-themed dessert bake-off to enter as well.

March Prayer Meetings On Wednesdays in March, starting at 6:30 pm, there will be an unstructured time of prayer in the sanctuary. Come in, pray a while, then leave quietly when you are done.

Members Meeting There will be a Members Meeting today following the morning worship service. We encourage all of our active members to attend.

Gideons Thanks to your generosity, over $1,300 was given to hand out more copies of the Bible.

Trust

When I was little my grandmother would often get out a small plastic box labelled “Precious Promises.” She would open the lid to reveal about a hundred small rectangular cards in different pastel colors. On each card was printed a verse of Scripture, a promise from God written in the Bible. She’d pick one, then let me pick one, and then she’d read them both aloud. Then she’d smile and say, “Now we’ve had our promises for today.” It was just one more way that she communicated to me the importance of the Bible, and how encouraging its words could be.

A few years later, after an aunt and uncle gave me my first Bible, my grandma showed me Proverbs 3:5-6, which says:

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” (NKJV)

Many of us are familiar with those verses, and maybe we’re a little too familiar. We gloss over them without really contemplating what they mean. There are three admonitions for us, followed by one promise from God.
